Why do you keep tortoise(s)?
Had a good chat recently with a fellow reptile enthusiaist about why we keep reptiles (in his case frogs and snakes and in mine tortoises!). Be interested to hear why others on here keep torts. For example, is it a control thing? Is it for conservation purposes? Is it to ease pressure on wild stock? Is it simply cause you're allegic to furries?! ........... We also found that amongst other enthusiasts we knew we were able to identify quite common traits in personality / ways of thinking etc! Just be interersted to hear others' views!

If you give it a little thought you will come to the conclusion that it is a control issue. These animals are very easy to control. I typed this before I fully read your post.

Was on my way to training in Colwyn Bay when I entered a pet shop I'd never been in before. In there I saw baby turtles for £16 each and I fell in love. Told my dad how Id be able to afford an actual turtle!! (I'm a poor student) My dad wasnt impressed as he said I'd have to pay for heating bills to keep their water warm, getting a viv, getting the viv up the stairs to my bedroom. (which is like the stairs up to shelob in lord of the rings i.e STEEP) and looking after a tortoise may be cheaper and easier. So I started investigating into tortoises!!! The more I read the more interested I became! After about a week I decided I wanted one...I suppose it was a bit of impulse which I know sounds bad but I do love animals! I decided Hermann over Horsfield even though Hermanns are bit more pricier but I thought they were prettier so....This was in March.... I didnt get Phoebe till May because she had to be 25g so I had to wait a while....
There no real good reason really........I just wanted one! |

We did and we did Ed! We thought it came down to control. This refelected the way we thought, what we studied, what we did for a living... Was interested to get other views too.

My lovely daughter wanted one, so we went to visit one in our local petshop, the manager brought it out for us to see, and I was hooked We used to go visit it every Saturday Seriously though, I'm a stay at home mum and can't go out to work as my son has ASD, they are such a lovely hobby, it gives me something to do while they are at school

I've wanted a tortoise since I was a little girl. I wasn't allowed one then and didn't think we could afford one now. Then we were gifted a tort and to say the whole family fell in love is an understatement! I made sure I could afford some hatchlings earlier this year and worked hard to put money aside for them and their set-up.
I am allergic to pets and reptiles are perfect for me. I love their characters and the way they look. It fits in with the kids and our home schooling lifestyle and our ASD son loves them and understands their needs pretty well. Even if I wasn't allergic to dogs/cats, I would get fed up of the hairs everywhere and would be forever hoovering, so perhaps the control thing comes in there for me. I know where the torts are and they don't whine or scratch or nibble the furniture. The rabbit and guineas are much loved but my interaction with them is limited due to my allergies. I feed them and talk to them but can't cuddle them or clean them out. The torts are very much my babies and I do everything for them

my father bought me my first tortoise in 1974 , been hooked ever since ,the reason i keep them has nothing to do with control , more to do with finding them interesting , the deeper you go the more interesting i find them.
