Is she on the road to recovery now Bindi? hope so, must have been a horrible time for you and your tortoise.

I knew Dolly had pinworms as I could see them but really didn't think she would have tested positive for Protozoa as she seems healthy, eating and her poo is firm like it should be.

Glad its only 2 doses she will need, one more to go

Going to get Ron and Reg tested in a couple of weeks seeing as Dolly got into their enclosure

Hope so Lynne, just taking it one day at a time at the moment. I think protozoa dies off pretty quickly but as I said would't hurt to get them checked out.

Only recently that it has been brought up that nyctotherus might be harmful. I don't think it is. It's mind blowing the first time you see it. I've never worried about it and still don't but when you treat for other protozoa... it is wiped out also.

If she defecates in their enclosure... odds are pretty good that the other tortoises will get what she has considering their favorite food. This is no different than birds going from one enclosure to another outdoors.

however I did see lots of worms in her poo, quite alot actually so sent off a poo sample to wormcount.com. Just gor her results back and they found OXYUIDS 1340epg and also Nyctotherus (protozoa).

I've already gave her a dose of the Panacur but she now needs Flagyl., so she will need to go to the vets.

What I wanted to ask is.. Is having Nyctotherus really bad? and the other day she climbed over into Ronnie and Reggies enclosure (found her eating their food) will they be a risk now of Protozoa?

Thanks Lynne x

Even in severely infested tortoises with protozoa I've seen relatively small numbers of the protozoa you mentioned. In fact... those are usually present when no other type of protozoa are present.

It is the other type of protozoa that they(whoever 'they' are) are probably talking about.

I'm sorry... just reread the top line... explained who 'they' are.

Protozoa might play a part in tortoise digestion... I don't think they do. It is bacteria that is the key player.

Balantidium sp. and Nyctotherus sp. are ciliated protozoans which are frequently encountered in chelonians stools. They are considered as normal inhabitants of the normal chelonian digestive-tract flora and play a usefull role in the digestion of cellulose. Therefore, in most cases, they appear to cause their hosts little or no distress. However, from time to time, due to a variety or reasons (such as dietary mismanagement; drugs treatments; …), these protozoans may outnumber their normal proportions resulting in pathogenic consequences (severe irritation of the intestinal walls). The symptoms may range from acute diarrhea, resulting in dehydration and weight loss into chronic cases with a complete loss of normal digestive-tract flora and inanition as a result of an inability to digest and metabolise the food consumed.

So I'm confused now as it says they live naturally in tortoises. Will she need treatment?
