Anyone on here a lepidopterist???
Found this beauty this avvo. It extends to 3 inches in length and is olive and brown in colour as well as the large white, head markings. I think it will be some kind of hawk moth but can't find the exact one. Perhaps someone will know. |

AWWWWW! Come on------none of God's creatures are ugly------at least that's what my Dad always told me when I said something like that! When looked at through a magnifier I can only marvel at the camouflage colours of olive green, white and brown, the lairy white on the head that can look a bit like bird poo! and the shield on the front of the face that looks and feels like plastic, then there are the feet with their strong little suckers and FINALLY-----the ominous click, click, clicking oh and nearly forgot the manic twisting and writhing that certainly managed to put the wind up me when it first did it!!!! All in all one of natures marvels. Well to me anyway. Snot a cloves moff it's a Deaths Head Hawks Moth or Acherontia atropos. |

I think it's a Acherontia atropos or Deaths dead hawk moth.

Wendy and yourself have got it right It is a Death's-head Hawk moth caterpillar. Seems to be a colour form of the caterpillar not often seen (and yes they do describe it as looking like a bird poo ).
