They really are lovely and such a shame there are so few left. Are there any places where they are in the wild and safe and not 'farmed'?

The Asian food markets, which have proliferated in the last twenty years have quite literally vacuumed up the wild Turtles from across the whole of South east Asia.
Where once, common species occured in abundance there is now a void. Because many of these species have such a low level of reprodutive recruitment, and take years to mature into breeding adults, the over collection has in large areas wiped out natural populations. Work done in the late 1990's, and early 2000's by European herpetologists brought the unsustainable nature of the trade to the world stage.
