Also, it is not possible to get round the side of our house we now have a shed locked from the inside but before this used our old front door to provide more security and a 6 foot high fence. the back fence has barbed wire and is very rickety would not want to try and climb over!! All sheds and greenhouses are also locked. Fingerprint - photograph the underside of your tort with the straight line length and this is also a good aid to getting a tort back if they do go missing. We also have movemnet sensor lights front and back and like you tell as few people as possible that we have torts. Good Luck.

im sorrry to hear this. i just cant understand how some one could have the heart to steal someones tortoise but i have the fear of leaving george out over night as we have a bit of bad history with the neighbours. its such a shame really but i hope you get your problem sorted. our area recently see a few tortoise thefts believed to be for the purpose of using them as studs.......hurts me to think how they end up getting treated .... but on a good note, thankfully yours were indoors x

I have got lots of great ideas and a lot to think about for next summer, thanks everyone!
The torts will not be out overnight again until I have upped my security big time When they were in the rabbit cages I used to push them under the trampoline. I will be thinking about the cctv, motion sensors, security lights etc. Its such a shame that we have to do this

Hi Clare, just caught up with this, I'm sorry that it's happened, you must have been quite shaken up.
Just my opinion but I wouldn't install security lights, if people are scrabbling arond in the dark by adding light you ar only making it easier for them to see where they're going and what they're looking for. Perhaps a light that you could switch on yourself if you are aware people are out there, but I certainly wouldn't use one of those sensor triggered ones |

I take your point but these security lights warn me of someone in my garden. I had a car taken when I was in the house and this is usually when thieves strike. they also, don't like unsocial hours so rarely do anything in the middle of the night.
Our local neighbourhood watch recommend them as a deterrent to thieves they will think twice about your property 'a thought?' Quote:
