Perhaps they are even more intelligent than us but just too intelligent to show it
After all look at how they have survived in the wild for so long - got to be more than instinct to achieve that better than most humans could ever hope to. Stick me in the middle of some tortoise habitats and chances are i wouldn't last long at all!!!!! |

I think it's fair to say that I've made some bold statements here that I can't back up!
Tortoises are not good at problem-solving when we put them into a man-made environment but I agree with Vicky that they have evolved to manage in very challenging natural conditions.

I am going to go out on a limb here - molluscs don't think.
However, Tortoises definitely do a degree of thinking but a lot is instinct I agree. Papa Un will stop to look over a ledge and I would imagine be deciding whether to walk over the edge or not. He doesn't - is that because he thinks it is too steep for him. Others nose plant it. Elenor will look up from her enclosure when I come into the room. She follows me round with her eyes. What's she thinking I wonder? But her actions are to follow me. Sometimes she walks over a little bit but when her view is obscured she goes back to the spot where she was and looks up again. CB

Gordon I'm climbing down a tad!
My friends helped me gently to see that I was making sweeping statements. But I still say tortoises do not think in the way that word is normally used.

yes crikey , wouldn't it be a boring world if everybody agreed on everything. though I would say it would make ordering take aways a whole lot easier.
I don't think this is a conclusive debate as we will probably never get to the end of it, and it is so interesting hearing all views. For me it goes back to aren't they amazing regardless ! (apologies to The National Molluscs Fanclub, Friends of the Molluscs Society and Molluscs United, they all have a place). CB

Doesn't take much to amaze me. I'm quite in awe of this planet and what it does on a daily basis. I think Vikki has a point in that maybe some of the tortoises are intelligent but in the circumstances how would they present that. My dog (terrier) amazes me with his intelligence and stupidity in equal measures - he actually barks at me if I laugh at him. And I point and laugh (I know its mean but it is funny) he will try and butt or crawl on me as if trying to stop me laughing. Nature's workings far outweighs any technology - just differently.
