You did indeed but I thought I would give a bit more information so he has a balanced view of the situation. There is no definitive reason known for pyramiding and to prevent Adam from feeling he has done something terribly wrong I thought it best to point this out. pyramiding does occur in the wild so pellets are clearly not the only reason it happens, as you say hydration can play a part too and if Adam were to soak the pellets, if he doesn't already, then that may also help with that part of the problem. A balanced diet is always recommended and this can be provided with weeds only, pellets only or a mix of the two.
I would check the humidity levels before making drastic changes to the diet. A tortoise table is hard to maintain a good humidity level on. Is he in a table?

Could it also be to do with the quantity of pellets fed? I believe the recomendation is !-2% of body weight & best to soak them first.
