Hi Birdie..im a bit confused here The red night light is positioned at the basking end? Where is the ceramic positioned??
How big is that viv, as that sounds like an awful lot of night warmth when I would imagine the warmth is contained in there overnight with one or the other method. Or maybe you don't need neither as it's milder outside now and due to get better still next week. The viv would maybe shield any cold draughts or drops in temps? But the red night light looks positioned at the basking end, so is this your basking bulb then...? Or have I got this wrong?? xx Last edited by yuna1971; 23-02-2012 at 06:59 AM. |

if your viv is in a heated room I'd be surprised if you need extra night heat but if it isn't then I've seen other people using those lights at night, as for whether they are too bright, only the tort would know really. Probably it wouldn't be too bright but who knows for sure.
BTW if you intend getting a combined heat+UVB bulb for in there be aware that the bulbs are quite large, about 6 or 7 inches high and quite wide + the holder could make it about 9 or 10 inches in all. The face of the bulb then needs to be a minimum of 12 inches from the highest point of the animal and it also has to be pointing straight down, not at an angle. You would also need to be able to control the temperature in some way, raising and lowering the bulb is the usual method but if height is restricted then I don't know how it's done for vivs |

Hey Birdie, not sure whether a combined bulb would be a good idea in a viv (if it's smallish) I just feel (along the lines of what Al said) you might have a problem a) with it getting too hot in there - how would you raise it up? b) allowing for the min height restrictions as you can't adjust anything. Could be easier to do the separates route - UV strip (with reflector) and basking bulb. Heat and not being able to adjust the height might scupper the combined route unless converting into a table and using stands and holders. xx

put the night light onto a dimmer stat and you'll find that it will rarely be on at full brightness (unless your house gets really cold of course)
