This is a bulk standard 500 watt infra red heater I bought purely for heating purposes, its mighty powerful and has an operational minimum distance of 1.8 metres. I was thinking of using it via a pulse propotional thermostat..

Also playing around with a 250 watt AMS microclimate system, a self contained ceramic heater/pulse proportional thermostat system.

Also been checking out basking spot humidity levels comparing MVB's to ceramic heaters. Ceramics seen to be less draining on RH within a basking area.

Hi Dave - interesting news from you as usual! Do you reckon that a ceramic heater is less de-hydrating than a halogen lamp?

I've found that the 160Watt MegaRay is pretty feeble on heat output. As you suggested, I'm gonna need heat from something else alongside it. I've got it up and running and taken some basic readings. To get a 32C basking spot I would be blasting a lot of UVB and it would be pretty close to the tortoise; not ideal. I'll post in Housing about the 160W MR as that may be of interest there.

Early days. I just ran a 100 watt ceramic at the opposite end to a 100 watt MVB. Same height, same sort of temperatures and the same starting point humidity levels. The ceramic basking spot stayed 10-15% high humidity than the MVB. I need to run it a bit longer, the MVB was already there maybe its drier under the soil so couldnt maintain a higher humidity.

Bit up to my neck in power filters and a broody box turtle at the moment but I'll have a go this week.

so at the moment what do people think are the best methods to heat and provide UV for tortoises indoors?

Well my thinking now is to use a decent M.V for. Boosting or basking spot, and then as the area of emission ismso small from M.V a linear tube to provide a good all round base of u.v.a and u.v.b, obviously heating is a separate issue whether this is provided by therm controlled halogen sources or therm controlled ceramics.

If you're already using a MV bulb then what % tube would you use John?
