Arcadia D3 Basking Lamp
I have installed two 160 W Arcadia lamps in my two Horsefield enclosures today. I have always used 160W but these seem much brighter and hotter than the last ones. Is 35 degrees C directly under the lamp too hot for my Horsefields please. They can obviously move away to cooler parts of the table if necessary.

Hi Julia. The different makes of lamps do perform differently. Is there no way to raise your lamps up a little?
Your hotspot temperature will vary depending on the background temperature. Would it be likely that sometimes your background temperature will be lower than it is right now? I'm saying that because of the very mild temperatures in some parts of the UK over the past couple of days.

Julia , hello. I have some 160W but only use them in non heated rooms and quite high so their temps only throw out 27 degrees - 29 hottest. I know some TK's like that temperature for their tortoises and then a much cooler end but I tend to keep my ones 27 - 29 degrees and never had a problem with eating husbandry and activity in over 25 odd years. Personally I would stick with the one and try and make it higher to drop that temperature right down otherwise your tortoise may aestivate if too hot. (plus overheat in my opinion if ambient is warm also as Jonathan says - has a bearing). CB

Thank you for your replies. I will make the lamps higher, if that doesn't work, I will buy two 100 watt bulbs instead. It is very mild today so I think that has affected it somewhat.

I found I had better control when I bought one of the zoo med stands as I could raise and lower really easily. I found room temperature (when I had them indoors) made quite a difference.

All sorted now - I have replaced the 160 watt bulbs with 100 watt. I think I might get the zoo med stands.

Do the Zoo med stands come with a wire loop to attach to the top of the dome lamp, so that you can hook it onto the stand.

The stand can lower or higher, but also extend forwards and back. Hope that makes sense?
