OK. I did post about this on the TT forum, and several people said that the red stuff in the Floretti Crispy is radicchio, and that it is fine for torts and they love it. Is this the same as the red leafed lettuce you were talking about (I know there are several kinds of red lettuce thingys).

Sorry to reply to myself (lol), but Martin Dann just posted this on the TT forum. Martin is the 'plant expert' on several forums and he is known for being really cautious when it comes to recommending plants (and he is especially against anything with oxalic acid). He says:
"The red leaves in Florette Crispy Salad are Radicchio (pronounced
radeekio). This is a red form of endive or chicory and great for
tortoises. They seem to go for the red colour, too."

If it had any oxalic acid in it Martin wouldn't recommend it, I'm sure.

Thanks Nina, very helpful information on the Red Raddico lettuce. Glad Martin Dann was able to help, I have heard good reports about his weed and plant identifying.

I use lettuce regulary in my diets up to 25% of the mixed weedy diet can consist of lettuce (Romaine,cos,gem and radicchio).

Lettuce has a neutral calcium to phosphourus count and some such as romaine have a higher count of calcium and fibre than some weeds we feed , lettuce is oxalic free also but many weeds aren't so adding the mentioned safe lettuce to diets in moderation in my experience is totally safe .

A very good concise answer Darren as always.

I understand now the misconception that surrounds this debate, so a small amount of these safe lettuces are in fact good for your tortoise along with a good mixture of weeds and flowers is whats needed for a well balanced med species tortoise diet.
