I've grown many Cacti from seed. They are available from most seed providers (just google cacti seed!).

Many species are extremely slow growing and patience is needed to get a decent sized plant. Opuntia in particular are very slow to reach a decent size, you would be better off obtaining a mature sized pad off someone and rooting it yourself.

Greg, if you interested in growing other cacti I have many species producing 'pups' (small offsets). This gives you a head start on seeds but still lets you watch them grow from a small size. I have a few Echinopsis hybrids I would be willing to send you for P&P only.

I grew some cacti from dragon fruit that I bought in the supermarket. I just took some of the pulp from the inside with the tiny black seeds inside and put them into a bit of soil. I was surprised how fast they grew.
Don't know if torts can eat them though.
