I have just bought another Arcadia bulb, not delivered yet though. I've only been using the Arcadias for about 10 weeks and no problems so far. plenty people have no problems with megaray either though, you only tend to hear about those that have problems. the UVB is very good on megarays usually Last edited by Alan1; 10-12-2010 at 01:23 PM. |

Thanks Rach / Alan - I'll invest in a solarmeter for peace of mind I think! No probs thus far with my megaray (which was a huge relief after my many problems with solarglo!).

Ok get this have just done the test. Ok I measured the SM length first. It measures 4.5". I then added this to the 12inch measuring distance - making a total distance from the soil to the bulb itself as 16.5". Pointing up, and obviously the distance being 12" from the SM sensor.... IT measured 195uw/cm2. Have I took all things right here? It was fluctuating between the latter 190's but after about 30secs, it kept going back to 195.
Unbelievable....? |

Should I worry then Al...?? About it being high to start with?
I cant think of any other way of testing. When you place the SM down on the soil, its hard to keep looking at the bulb (obviously you have to be bit careful) to keeping it there...then measuring. This was I measure the SM itself first then just added on the 12inches afterwards. Even I am surprised...surprised enough to make me think, HAVE I done it right? How would you do it Al, I mean with trying to get the line of sight from brightest point...keeping the SM in place + trying to wrestle with the measurement...and finally tying that line of measurement with where the end of the bulb is... |

I don't look at the bulb Rach. I have the SM on the ground pointing upwards with the distance at 12" from the top of SM to the lowest point of the bulb (about 16.5 inches or whatever total from ground to bulb like you said).
Then I press the button and hold it and then move the SM around but without raising it off the ground at all, just kind of covering an area as wide as the bulb and take the highest reading you get. on the uv guide site it says the highest UVB reading isn't necessarily right in the centre of the beam either. Regards your high UVB bulb, is it a 160w? not sure if that makes a difference or not, like whether 160w's produce more UVB, I think they do you know. I suppose if they can give off too low UVB then they might can give off too high as well, don't know what effect that would have on a tort. Did you see that other thread where jonathan was on about that Osram 300w bulb he has, very very high UVB and he has it at 2ft high |
