I have just got a hatchling horsefields tortoise and was wondering how damp the substrate should be becasue he keeps digging and the substrate doesnt really hold burrows too well. i didnt want to dampen the substrate lots as i know the problems it can cause, so i thought i would seek advice here. many thanks |

Welcome Sid, 65% humidity but not soaking, so that's about 4 mister sprays onto the top of the substrate usually but as Jonathan asks it depends what substrate. Horsfields are cute little things but need loads of stimulation - difference between a working springer and a Chichicua. Piece of broken pot is great for them to burrow under so don't rely on the substrate as that will always give way and provide the mattress. If you've got wood chip - ditch it - worse substrate ever for any tortoise, CB

As has already been asked what type of substrate. Just as important could I ask what depth of Substrate, this very important horsfeildi are not as forgiving as some types of tortoise. Close attention needs to be paid to their environment.
