planting seeds
Would it be a waste of time sowing weed seeds this time of year?
Not sure whether to just sprinkle them around the enclosure and hope for the best or wait until next year now. Any advice please?

Depends on what seeds they are Lynne. I find that clover, dandelions, vetch and slender plantain come up pretty quickly. I usually sow a few pots in the summer to take me through the autumn.

I'm not sure how quickly the mallow will grow but I'd have imagined the vetch would do okay. It usually goes wild in my garden!

This can be a good time to sow seeds, but if the weather improves a lot then some watering of seedlings will be necessary.
But I think sprinkling seeds around the enclosure won't work well. Seeds generally need to be covered by a certain amount of soil to germinate. When I've done alright with seeds it's been after very careful ground prep and burying the seeds by roughly the right amount of soil.

Lol well I must be lucky then, as I just throw seeds around the areas I want them to grow, and just leave them. But I do sow mine in the Autumn, and let the Winter do its job, I also let my dandies go to seed, so they self set around the garden too. I usually have enough weeds to last mine until around July. August is always the month with hardly any weeds around, but the self set seeds, will be around for September. I have done this for the last ten years or so, and so far not been let down.

It's interesting these things vary a lot across the country. Here there are always loads of weeds into October because of the amount of rain. But cold and wet weather are not great for seed germination and quite a lot of species don't do well from seed.

The weather before I went, was probably the worst we have had here in Kent for at least five to six years, cold and wet. And weeds were very slow to appear, the sunshine did its job:0)

And I bet the sun was out all day almost every day when you were visiting. Not that I'm jealous at all!
