Hello and welcome to SW what species is your new tortoise?
I thought Cecil was a good choice of name as it could end up as Cecilia

Hi all
He is a Horsfield and is very sweet, and very active when he wakes up.
It seems to take him about a hour after his lamp is on before he starts doing things. Is this right ?
His shell measures about 9 cm,would that be about right for 18 months old ?
Thanks for the welcomes

Hi and welcome to you both. Great name

We love to hear stories and see piccies here!
Also, ask anything you're not sure of, there's a lot of knowledgable people here. I'm sure someone will be able to help with sizing, mine are much younger so I'd be no help I'm afraid. xx

Torts use the heat to charge up once they are heated they then become active. So it doesn't sound out of place that he is taking time before he is active. I don't keep Horsfields but I know their care is similar to Hermanns. If you have not had him long he could also be settling in to his new home which could take a few weeks.

Did you get the tort from a shop or a breeder, I have found with captive bred tortoises (that are not CITES protected) it can be very diffucult to age them based purely on size.

Accelerated growth can be caused by overfeeding with would make it difficult to age based on the size. Obviosuly if you got it from a breeder they would be able to tell you when it hatched otherwise it would be nothing more than an estimation.

I have two 2007 hatched Hermanns where one is nearly twice the size of the other and a 2010 hatched Hermann that despite only 3 years age difference still fits in the palm of my hand where the others require two hands to pick up properly.

Hope that helps
