There was a field connected to this Alan. It was kept with about 6 sulcatas.

It doesn't make me wonder one bit. The environmental conditions are not the best and I don't fault the zoos for this.

My Aldabras are proof positive that a pelleted diet is acceptable.

Well... it could be a trait of the species. If you look at Justin Gerlicks book on Aldabras he mentions a race or species of aldabras that are flat like that.

Also... as mentioned... the environmental conditions are probably not quite just right.

Ahh ok, that makes sense. Nice big tort and seemed to be quite happy. As I said, had access to a field and "house".

I have yet to see any tortoise's raised on pellet's that have a smooth shell. All the one's i've seen in zoo's have been bumpy !
