If this could have happened would that mean it may be one that was laid late last season?
Also would it be the size of a six month old if that were the case as it wouldn't have grown whilst hibernating.
Oh it's all such a mystery but a lovely outcome whatever

Sorry to keep posting but I have just remembered something that is along this line. A person at the tortoise group I go to had some eggs laid by her female, as she didn't want to breed she put them straight in the compost bin, yes you've guessed it, she discovered a while later that they had hatched!!

The could have hatched last year even? Is it the same size as a captive raised 6 month old?

Wow - what a lovely surprise! Not sure if you'll get to the bottom of it, but I bet you've been turning the garden upside down checking for more of them this afternoon!

Real headscratcher RFM but I'm inclined towards the hatched last year, overwintered in the nest or close by theory. Is it a Boettgeri or Hermanni by the way?

This would work great as the rotting compost produces heat. Grass snakes in the UK like to lay their eggs in compost heaps.

Hi, Dave, It's a real mystery , there is a greenhouse about 50 feet away that was used last year but not this , it looks very healthy and a nice smooth shell , bright eyes etc , i guess there could be more about , problem is the gardens 1 1/2 acre's and in areas thick undergrowth, by the way this one is a boettgeri
