Odd behavior... Submission?
We've had a lovely day down here today and our 2 have been out stomping their new half-built enclosure.
Anyway, they retired back to their house and I thought nothing of it. I looked over Fiorano was sat in the door way, looking up and around, and the Valentino was by his side with his head down. I thought V was in the throws of biting F, so ignored them. But probably 10 mins later I looked again and they were both in exactly the same position. and I mean exactly. I sat and just stared at them for about 5 mins waiting to see if V was indeed trying to bite, but nope, just sat there with his head down pointing at F's leg. they have been scrapping/humping a lot lately, so is this the outcome? do we have a winner and a sign of submission? Or is it nothing

lol
but for Valentino to be sat like that with his neck outstretched staring for at least 20 mins? Doesn't look comfortable! I guess, the question I should have asked, is do tortoises establish a hierarchy as seen in other animals?

Certainly with males their is an alpha male, this is why they fight if females are around. Less likely if they have grown up with each other, as they seem to "know" who is alpha male then. But when you introduce a new male, there will be fighting. More if there is a female around.

Yes he did Rach have a look in the housing thread, he's done a step by step modification of the old enclosure and there are some great pictures of the new tortoise house from Northumberland joinery x

Looks like he's just relaxing to me, mine stay like that for longish periods of time especially on a hot day mid to late afternoon. I dont think it means they have established who's boss. I think its wose at certain times of year. I have some young males just reaching maturity & they are more active mid/late morning but collapse late afternoon, just like my females
