Most things we do in life are a survival instinct, but seeing as humans class what is "intelligence" then of course we are going to skew it to make us look good. Humans are but stupid creatures with great power ;o)
Depends what you class as communication. I think Plops has a great power to communicate to me what she needs. If she's trying to climb out of her cage, I know she's bored so I take her on an adventure. If she stands on her food slab looking disapproving, I know she's hungry, so I go get her food. And if she doesn't get these things when she demands them, she DEFINITELY sulks.
