Do many people keep this species and are they difficult to breed? Don't see so much about terrapins these days apart from the odd one being found in a pond and mistaken for a tortoise at one time the red ears were found everywhere.

I know a few people keeping these. Mine live in an outdoor pond year round, they're very cold tolerant and do well like this down south. They dont get bigger than 4-5 inches as adults so a good species to keep.

I don't have a great deal of breeding success with them, others do. Every year I get a clutch of 3 and 4 eggs from my two females. Every year only one egg is fertile and hatches so I have a good line of 1,2,3,4 ,5 year old turtles.

As they live in the pond year round they’re fairly naturalised, I could probably improve fertility by pairing them up with my males in the spring, away from the pond but I prefer letting them live the way they are.

This is the adults pond. Its a 6ft x 3ft raised bed with a liner. The mesh is more to keep cats out than turtles in. In the winter I cover the whole thing with a sheet of polycarb, which also helps to extend the active season both sides of winter as it turns the whole thing into a cold frame.

Caught them on the blink camera this morning, this is the land section built into that 6x3.

Congratulations on the new baby. :-)
Yes, they look very content from that blink camera. To be honest I thought they'd need a bigger pond so I can see why they're easy to keep especially staying so small.
Thanks for sharing - really interesting and lovely to see.

I love to see terrapins outside and hope that Spottie has been out enjoying the fantastic weather.
