Diatamaceous earth as a dewormer.

Has anyone considered Diatamaceous earth to worm their tortoises? Just curious as I have been reading about it and it's claimed to be an effective and natural way of treating internal and external parasites in many animals and humans.

isn't that the stuff that's supposed to be sharp or something and cut the bodies of the bug?

I've never thought about it for torts. I know a lot of poultry keepers use it for the coop, in food or in dust bathing areas. I used to use Staloslan F regularly to try and reduce any smells and as a disinfectant in their run, but now we're down to three hens, the chicken coop isn't at all smelly so I sprinkle it far less regularly than I used to.

That's the basic theory yes. It scratches the outer body of the parasite removing any protective layer it may have to be able to survive the intestines and if that's not enough to kill it it then dehydrates it as DE it very drying and soaks up a lot of moisture.
